The Case for In-Person Events in 2021 (and how to keep them safe!)
While it might seem like a pipe dream with rising cases of COVID-19 and the threat of more lockdowns, the return of in-person events may be closer than you think! Here’s why we need to set our sights on 2021 and start preparing!
COVID-19 should be on the downswing
According to McKinsey & Company, “the epidemiological endpoint [of COVID-19] is most likely to be achieved in the third or fourth quarter of 2021.” This prediction takes into account natural herd immunity as well as herd immunity from an effective vaccine available for wide and rapid distribution by early 2021. And people are optimistic about this projection too. A recent Martech’s Events Participation Index study revealed that 6 out of 10 people expect to be participating in in-person events by the third quarter of 2021.
We need connection
We’re nothing if not adaptable. With the rise of COVID-19, many business owners and their teams started thinking outside the box and trying to figure out ways to adapt their offerings to meet the changing needs of their prospects. In many cases, businesses that previously relied on in-person events reinvented their shows in a virtual space. Today, virtual events are increasingly common. Many businesses rely on them to generate leads and increase their brand awareness as well as maintain relationships with their current customers...and with much success!
Ultimately, however, humans are wired for relationships and crave a personal connection that only in-person interactions can provide. That explains why, tragically, recent social isolation has increased mental illness and chemical dependency by a whopping 40%. Combine this deep need with the increasing confidence in herd immunity and trade shows like Grassroots and The Big Gear Show are already scheduling their events for the third and fourth quarter of 2021.
Precautions convention centers can take to keep your event safe
The thought of resuming in-person events in 2021 might leave you feeling both excited and apprehensive. To put your mind at ease, there are some effective ways to keep attendees safe at future in-person events.
First, organizers and exhibitors should be upfront about their safety protocol prior to the event. Requiring face masks, offering pre-packaged food and implementing social distancing in small spaces can help reduce transmission of the COVID virus.
